The parts, in the order they fail
Pads: the scale problem
Everything about pad life here comes back to water. The pump

The float valve

Belt

Blower motor
Single-speed or two-speed motors, and the hum-with-no-air symptom. Before any motor is condemned, the start capacitor gets tested, because a failed capacitor stalls a perfectly good motor. Then the blower shaft bearings get checked, because bearings that ran dry can freeze the shaft and make a good motor look seized. Only then is it a motor: $300 to $700, two-speed at the top. The bearings on the blower shaft take a few drops of oil every spring; a season without it is how a $60 bearing job becomes a $500 motor job.
