What Los Lunas is

Los Lunas is the Valencia County seat, a village of 17,242 people at the 2020 census at 4,860 feet on the Rio Grande, and by the village’s own 2024 estimate now past 19,000 and the second-fastest growing city in New Mexico. It has been the county seat since 1876, incorporated in 1928 with 466 residents, and grew from 973 people in 1970 to 3,525 in 1980, 10,034 in 2000, and 17,242 in 2020. Meta’s data center, announced in 2016, opened on February 7, 2019. The Rail Runner stops here, I-25 runs through, NM 6 and NM 314 tie it to the surrounding communities, and UNM keeps its Valencia branch campus in the village. The 2020 census counted 6,705 housing units.

That growth history is the cooler map. A thin layer of older adobe and frame houses around the old village core and along the river, a wave of 1970s and 1980s ranches from the first growth spurt, and a large share of 2000s production homes with furnace ductwork from the tripling since 2000. Coolers sit on all three, but they are very different jobs.

What fails on Los Lunas coolers

The valley freeze. Los Lunas is on the valley floor, and the NWS Albuquerque fall freeze table for the Los Lunas 3 SSW station says so: average first 32 degree freeze October 21, average first 28 degree freeze October 31, record early freeze September 19, 2006. Scale. Rio Grande valley water is mineral-heavy whether it comes from a municipal well or a private one, and every gallon the cooler evaporates leaves the mineral on the pads and in the pump. Heat. The valley south of Albuquerque runs warm, and coolers here work hard from May on. Blower bearings that were not oiled at start-up seize in June, and a motor at $300 to $700 is the result. The start-up is when that gets prevented.

Dual-system houses. The 2000s production stock often has both a cooler and refrigerated air, and the cooler’s down-duct damper has to seal or the AC leaks out through the cooler all summer. Checked at both seasonal visits.

Cottonwoods and farm dust. The bosque and the irrigated fields in the valley load pad faces and pump screens. Screens get cleaned at start-up and again mid-season on houses near the river.

Convert, or keep the cooler

For the 2000s stock with furnace ductwork, central refrigerated air is a coil, a condenser, and electrical work, toward the bottom of the $6,000 to $15,000 range, plus $300 to $800 to remove the cooler and patch the roof. For the older adobe and 1970s houses without ducts, a mini-split at $3,500 to $8,000 per zone or the hybrid (keep the cooler, add a mini-split for the monsoon weeks) is the honest answer. Permits and licensing

New Mexico licenses cooler work at the state level under the Construction Industries Division’s MM-3 and MM-98 classifications, and technicians doing work arranged through this site are licensed and insured.
