PNM’s residential Rate 1A tariff (27th revised) bills a $11.93 monthly customer charge and then energy in blocks. In the summer billing months of June, July, and August: the first 450 kilowatt-hours at $0.0896783, the next 450 at $0.1486546, and everything above 900 at $0.1994661, before the fuel and purchased power adjustment and taxes. In the other nine months the upper blocks are $0.1282683 and $0.1701214.

Take the University of Arizona figures for a 2,000 square foot house: a cooler at 250 kilowatt-hours a month, refrigerated air at about 850. Assume the household’s other usage already fills the first 450 kilowatt-hour block, which is typical.

That is a gap of roughly $110 a month for the three summer billing months, before the fuel adjustment and taxes that apply to both, and before the cooler’s water. The cooler wins the utility bill every month it runs. It loses the comfort contest for a few weeks in July and August. The conversion decision is whether those weeks are worth several hundred dollars a summer plus a five-figure install. For some households, absolutely. For others, no.

The three options, priced honestly

Central refrigerated air: $6,000 to $15,000

A condenser outside, an air handler or a furnace-coil combination inside, and ductwork. The range is driven by three things:

  • Ductwork. A cooler pushes air through one down-duct into a hall register and relies on open windows for return. Refrigerated air needs supply runs to every room and a return. Some 1970s and newer houses in the Northeast Heights already have a furnace and usable ducts, and the job is adding a coil and condenser. A 1930s Nob Hill bungalow or a 1950s adobe in the North Valley has none of it, and running ducts through a flat-roofed house is most of the bill.
  • Electrical. A condenser needs a dedicated 240 volt circuit and often a panel upgrade. That is a separately licensed electrician (EE-98 or ER-1 under New Mexico’s Construction Industries Division rules), and you are told up front.
